Pterygoid Implants / Tuberopterygoid implants
Tubers pterygoid implants are for patients who do not have enough bone for ordinary implants.
What are Tuberopterygoid Implants?
- The terms “Pterygoid Implants” or “Pterygomaxillary Implants” and “Tuberosity Implants” are used for interchangeably. Trisa Dental Solutions offers a unique and simple alternative Tuberopterygoid Implants. Tuberopterygoid Implants are placed in majority of cases using minimally invasive flapless procedure under local anaesthesia through the tuberosity bone into the Ptergygoid plates. Forces of occlusion go to the pterygomaxillary bone which is stable and cortical allowing Immediate loading of implants. Tuberopterygoid Implants shortens the time for a difinitive procedure on implants thus avoiding inconvenience of a post surgical treatment of sinus lift and low success rate of the implants integrated in the sinus lift and sinus augmentation procedure.
- Today, despite the application and constant improvement of various techniques such as sinus floor elevation, vertical and horizontal augmentation of the alveolar ridge, the use of zygoma and extra-short implants etc, the issue of functional and aesthetic rehabilitation of distal maxillary defects with dental implants persists. Unsatisfactory quantitative and qualitative parameters of bone tissue in this anatomical site considerably complicate, and at times even make it impossible to install dental implants. Moreover, they often require additional surgical interventions aimed at increasing the volume of bone tissue, significantly extending the terms of the final prosthesis. The progressive method of rehabilitation of patients with dental loss in distal upper jaw is the use of the technique of so-called tubero-pterygoid implantation proposed by J.F. Tulasne in 1985, the main feature of which is placement of dental implants in cortical areas of the pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone and the pyramidal process of the palatine bone
- The best solution for cases with severe bone resorption in upper jaw is pterygoid implant. Tuberopterygoid implants are the best solution for patients requiring dental implants for upper jaw. Such patients were going for sinus lift or bone grafts as per old techniques.
Why Place A Pterygoid Implant?
The reason for this is it can help you have teeth on the same day or next day of the extractions!! Immediate upper fixed teeth!! Basically the pterygoid implant allows immediate loading and gets you teeth faster which is a big advantage for taking pressure off of the gums while fixing the prosthesis
Necessity Of Pterygoid Implants?
Today, any dentist with proper education and training routinely places conventional dental implants in patients with sufficient bone conditions. They may also perform minor bone augmentation or sinus augmentation procedures, but they tend not to treat patients with severe bone loss.
These patients, unfortunately, need to rely on removable dentures or undergo massive augmentation procedures before conventional implants can be place. Pterygoid implants present an alternative option to use residual bone for implant anchorage and to overcome the need for augmentation procedures.
What are the Advantages of Tuberopterygoid Implants?
- There is no need for sinus grafting
- Patients no longer require placement of cantilevers from implants
- It allows patients to enjoy food in much the same way as they did before their teeth started falling out. This isn’t possible with zygomatic implants because of the presence of cantilevers
- The pterygoid bone structure is incredibly strong, allowing dentists to immediately load implants
- Pterygoid implants require a single piece implant. This avoids the risk of screws losing tension after passage of time
- Because the procedure is minimally invasive, there is no fear of swelling or bleeding. This means that patients no longer need the use of blood thinners to stop bleeding
- The procedure is highly efficient with a success rate of almost 100%
- Patients receive a full set of teeth
Given the above advantages, tubero-pterygoid implants provide patients with a great alternative to zygomatic implants which are costly and time consuming.
Where Does A Pterygoid Implant Go?
The pterygoid implant goes where your wisdom teeth on the upper jaw used to be. It comes in today special angle through some of the softer bone and then the apex anchors into stronger bone.its length ranges
from 16 to 20 mm, they have a pointed, selftapping apex to ensure strong anchorage when inserted
A pterygoid implant cannot stand alone. It must be anchored to other implants in order for it to be usable. If not strong enough by itself but is very useful when you have implants on either side of an upper jaw that has no teeth. Often times patients that have pterygoid implants often have second pterygoid implants and other alternatives such as bone leveling to finally get to a Prettau dental implant zirconia bridge
The surgery requires specialty training and an **extremely good knowledge*** of the anatomy. This is not for everyone!
DR VEERENDRAKUMAR, s Dental Surgery Centre Advanced Dental Speciality Clinic offers a unique and simple alternative that is tuberopterygoid implants. These implants are placed in majority of cases using minimally invasive flapless procedure under local anaesthesia through the tuberosity bone into the pterygoid plates. Forces of occlusion go to the pterygo maxillary bone which is stable and cortical, allowing immediate loading of implants. Tuberopterygoid implants, shortens the time for a definitive procedure on implants thus avoiding inconvenience sinus lift problems and also low success rate of the implants integrated in the sinus lift and sinus augmentation procedure, this procedure is also reduces overall dental implant cost and also sinusitis as sinus is not involved.
